community arts residency

making the place a creative partner

Community arts residencies bring together an artist, a place, and the people who live there. They are not conventional residencies simply moved into a neighborhood. They are designed as shared creative processes: the artist brings a line of inquiry, a practice, and formal rigor; residents bring stories, ways of using places, memories, know-how, and situated knowledge.

We aim to renew cultural mediation (the work of bringing people and art together) by grounding it in the experience of the artistic process. Participants don’t just encounter a finished work or a talk about art. They discover how artistic research moves forward: observing, trying, failing, starting over, selecting, assembling, producing, and exhibiting. This closeness makes the work and craft of making art more accessible without reducing its complexity.

Choosing the artist is crucial. We look for approaches that can open up to co-creation and to passing on know-how, while keeping a strong artistic identity. The ability to listen, a regular presence, attention to rights, and a willingness to negotiate forms with a group matter as much as mastery of the medium. The place must never become anonymous raw material or a backdrop for a work that has already been decided.

The residency begins with an immersion phase. Walks, visits, informal meetings, archival research, discussions with partners, and first experiments help us understand the place and bring out a working question. This stage protects the project from preconceived outside views and allows time to build relationships before expecting participants to produce anything.

Workshops then open up the artist’s practice: photography, video, Super 8, drawing, sound, installation, writing, cyanotype, photogram, collage, or publishing. The point is not to ask the group to imitate a style. Participants discover a way of exploring and adapt it to their own stories. Trials, gestures, and discussions become shared material.

Co-authoring the final form is the heart of the residency. Images, sounds, objects, drawings, and texts are reviewed together. The title, the series, the sequencing, print formats, relationships of scale, and the flow of the exhibition are discussed with participants. This shift from producing to composing lets them take on a genuine role as co-authors and, where possible, as co-curators.

The public presentation takes place locally, sometimes in several venues to reach different audiences. It can also travel to a museum, a library, an arts center, or another neighborhood, as long as it stays connected to the context in which it was made. Talks, tours, and guided sessions let residents and the artist present the process and the choices behind the work together.

Finally, a residency produces lasting documentation: photos of each stage, a research notebook, artworks, texts, testimonies, a publication, a film, or an exhibition that can be restaged. These traces can lead to a second year, a touring version, a new residency, or a dialogue with another place. They also make it possible to recognize the residency as a complete artistic experience, not just a series of recreational activities.
