This summer, young people from Îles de Mars and Olympiades photographed their neighborhood and wrote the title and caption of each image themselves. Then they went out to interview their neighbors on camera. This exhibition is their photos, their words and their questions.
The title comes from here. For years, a fence and then a wall separated Îles de Mars from Olympiades. It is gone now. Every generation we met this summer talks about it, and none of them misses it.
« It was a bit of a neighborhood war. Completely ridiculous, back then. Now we're one neighborhood, and that's good. »
AkbelThe young people in the workshop also wrote a text to introduce their neighborhood:
« One of the things that defines the neighborhood is its four towers. In Pont-de-Claix they are often stigmatized, when they are full of workers, of people who help others, of people who want to make it and of talents waiting to step out of the shadows. »

It's the neighborhood mosque, where everyone meets on Fridays for jumu'ah or during Ramadan. It's next to the church. Made for prayer, it's one of the only sacred places in Le Pont-de-Claix.

It's the best-known tower in the neighborhood… We have lots of memories there. When we were little, we hung around there all the time. It's not just the colors that have changed.

In this photo are my brother and his mates. I chose this photo because I've been playing in this space since I was a kid, with my childhood friends too.

îles de mars / olympiades
“Our neighborhood is called Îles de Mars / Olympiades.” The young people in the workshop start their text with that slash, right where there was for a long time a fence, and then a wall. Depending on your age, you didn't know the same border: a line not to cross for some, a boundary others simply didn't need.
What brought it down were the places that couldn't be split in two: the secondary school, the Escale youth center, the mosque.
« At school, at the Escale, they became our mates. »
Abdel Karim« Now we're one neighborhood, and that's good. »

Kader, a 22-year-old young man from the Îles de Mars neighborhood. Hard-working, entrepreneur, comedian… Either a millionaire or flat broke! Married and soon a millionaire. Tax exile back home coming soon. Bad luck at the lottery.

I've known him since I was a child, since I was a tiny baby. We went through childhood, youth, adolescence together, almost up to now. Ups and downs, but we never let each other go. He's like my brother. He sets an example by working hard. I hope he opens his bakery. He takes care of the family. He's a really good person.

As you can see in the photo: this is the Îles de Mars sports court, where we all grew up. Since we were little, we've all played together at “12 months”, “Spanish”, “petit pont boulette”, for those in the know. The court is the childhood memory only the real ones know.

chez nous
We see brothers from the neighborhood playing Brazilian-style, even though they're French, Algerian, Moroccan. We're at the Îles de Mars sports court. It's our HQ: where we laughed, fought, cried. The court kind of raised us, so to speak.

aziz, cinquante ans aux îles de mars
Aziz was born in Îles de Mars and never really left. Half a century in the same place, watching the neighborhood change around him. He talks about it without nostalgia: if the neighborhood has changed, so has he.
« I've lived in Îles de Mars for about fifty years. The neighborhood has changed for the better, it's calmer. It was always a working-class neighborhood, in any case. »
AzizWhen he was a child, every family knew every other. In October they went up the hill for chestnuts; in June, cherries; in summer, the Pont-de-Claix swimming pool, open-air back then.
« Doors stayed open, in the 80s, right up to the 90s. »
Aziz« We felt like Tom Sawyer. »

Three residents, sitting at the foot of the towers. Akbel grew up in Îles de Mars and is raising her children there; with Aïda, she runs the Casa des Îles, the neighborhood association. Mr Meghraoui arrived in Pont-de-Claix in 1958. Between them, the interview turns into a conversation.
« I love Îles de Mars, I adore the Îles de Mars neighborhood. It's a great neighborhood, family-minded and friendly. »
Akbel« It used to be very good. The families, the old-timers who all knew each other. Today it's not the same: there aren't many old-timers left. »
Mr Meghraoui« You're here, you are. You're one of the old-timers! »
Aïda« There's no Chicago here. »

In the Olympiades entrance halls and on the nursery wall, five posters. The first introduces the Point de vue workshop, run this summer by APASE and mOst with the young people of Îles de Mars and Olympiades: the neighborhood is not described from the outside, it photographs, captions and questions itself.
The young people photographed what surrounds them, gave each image a title and a caption, wrote a text about their neighborhood, then went to put their questions to their elders, camera in hand.

At the entrance of the Îles de Mars towers, three plexiglass panels carry the residents' words. The first is about what passes from one generation to the next: stories nobody checks, places, gestures. The neighborhood's name, for instance, has two stories.
« that's what we know of our history, among ourselves »
Aziz« it was like little islands »
Abdelkrim« it would be good if other generations took over. »

The second tells of life at the foot of the buildings. The base of the tower is a shared living room; the Casa des Îles welcomes women and children there, in premises that are too small. The frictions are everyday ones, and everyone asks for the same thing: to talk to each other.
« It's like family, everyone knows each other, we feel good here »
Abdelkrim« if there's no communication, we can't move forward. »
Akbel« we'd like the residents who complain to the authorities to talk more and come and speak to us in person »

The third is about being young here. Aziz remembers a time without phones, when you went downstairs to make up games. In every generation the same request comes back: a place of your own. The names of everyone who took part are written on it.
« we had to go downstairs, get together, meet up, make up games »
Aziz« for the little ones there's a lot; for the older ones, not much. »
Amir« we'd like there to be a place for young people in winter »
