atterrir · a museum of neighborhoods

how it’s made

atterrir does not film the neighborhoods: it rebuilds them from public data, then sets the mOst exhibitions inside them. It is an immersion, not an exact copy. Here is where everything comes from, what is measured and what is drawn.

the neighborhoods, from public data

In France, the buildings, their courtyards, heights, floors and the materials of their walls and roofs come from the BD TOPO of IGN, the French mapping agency. Every height is checked against LiDAR HD, the IGN laser survey: the laser measurement only replaces the BD TOPO one when the whole roof answers the same way; otherwise it is almost always a tree covering it. A building that only exists in OpenStreetMap is kept only if the laser really sees a volume there. The trees also come from the LiDAR.

In Maré, in Rio de Janeiro, the buildings and their heights come from the Instituto Pereira Passos, the city’s planning institute (data.rio). Buildings that this survey does not have yet come from Overture Maps, with an estimated height.

In Medellín, the city cadastre covers only half of the area. So the houses, streets and ground come from Overture Maps, which brings together OpenStreetMap, Google and Microsoft. The slope comes from Terrain Tiles: one elevation point roughly every four meters, from 1,634 to 2,292 m.

Everywhere, the globe comes from Natural Earth, the relief seen from above from SRTM and Terrain Tiles, and the base map from OpenStreetMap.

what is measured, what is drawn

measured

  • the footprint of every building and its courtyards
  • its height, in France and in Rio
  • the trees, in France
  • the sports grounds
  • the relief

drawn

  • the look of the façades: windows, doors, colors, bricks and render follow the BD TOPO materials or the colors of each neighborhood; they are not photographs
  • the height of most houses in Medellín, between one and four floors, and of the buildings added in Maré
  • where the works stand

the works in the neighborhood

The images are those of the exhibitions, in their format: banners, posters, panels, plexiglass. They stand in the streets, on the walls and fences of the neighborhood, close to the places where they were shown: the 3D is for walking around with them, not for rebuilding the hanging to the inch. The installation photographs, at each stop, show how it really was.

The mOst team can move each stop on the map, and the page keeps the correction: it is a living archive, which becomes more precise with every return to the field.
